Their existing Intranet and global collaboration system was in need of significant investment in order to remain stable and up to date in 2016. A decision was made to move from the existing IBM technologies and use Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud.
A Specialist Migration from an IBM stack to the Microsoft platform
A French insurance group, composed of companies that manage life, health and other forms of insurance policy including investment management. The group operates in Western Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, with presence also in Africa. The five operating business segments are life and savings, property and casualty, international insurance, asset management and other financial services.
Their existing Intranet and global collaboration system was reviewed in 2016 and it was identified that it was in need of significant investment in order to remain stable and up to date. A decision was made to move from the existing IBM technologies and use Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud.
They were looking for a way to automatically move all of the valuable collaboration and Intranet content from the legacy system to the Microsoft cloud platform with minimal business disruption. T-Systems and the client worked together to build a migration factory that would automatically move all content and data from the legacy systems to Microsoft Office 365.
At a Glance
Migrate existing content and data to refresh the insurer’s Intranet and collaboration platform. Move from the legacy IBM environment, made up of IBM Connections, IBM Quickr, IBM WCM and WebSphere to Microsoft Office 365. The goal was to give employees a more modern experience and to provide the look and feel of social platforms that employees were used to.
T-Systems’ client opted for a migration factory that could be used by all business entities globally to move their existing content automatically from IBM’s platform to Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud. The automated migration factory allowed each business entity to migrate their valuable Intranet and collaboration content with no disruption to business continuity.
Thanks to the automated migration solution built, using T-Systems’ Vamosa Migration Architect, our client was able to roll out a global programme of migration from the legacy IBM intranet and collaboration platform to Microsoft Office 365. This ensured that the legacy system could be retired and that all business entities had all content and data ready to use in the new Office 365 Cloud with no business disruption.
Our client is a French multinational insurance firm that engages in global insurance, investment management, and other financial services.
The insurance group operates primarily in Western Europe, North America, the Asia Pacific region, and the Middle East, with presence also in Africa. The group is a conglomerate of independently run businesses, operated according to the laws and regulations of many different countries. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.
The legacy Intranet and collaboration platform was both technically and functionally obsolete and required significant investment to remain stable and up to date. Our client started a group wide project to prepare the implementation of their new intranet and collaboration platform. The decision was made to move from IBM technologies to Microsoft Office 365.
Our client needed a partner to work with them to design a solution to automatically migrate content from the three legacy IBM systems to the new Microsoft Office 365 implementation. This automatic migration would be offered to 46 business entities which had a presence on the legacy IBM Intranet and collaboration platform.
Working with our client T-Systems’ consultants designed and built a migration factory using the Vamosa Migration Architect toolset. The factory was designed to take the content from the legacy IBM source systems: IBM Quickr, IBM Connections and IBM WCM and automatically migrate it to the Microsoft Office 365 environment.
The migration factory extracted the content from these three legacy systems, transformed the content to fit the new target design within Office 365. This included modifying the content to work with the new mobile first design. Transforming the content from legacy IBM applications, to move to the modern experience in SharePoint.
The migration factory was used as part of a 2 year roll out programme to all their business entities. Each individual entity was consulted with separately regarding the automatic migration of their legacy content to the new Office 365 platform. The factory performed analysis of the legacy system to discover the scope for the migration. Once transformed the content was moved to the appropriate Microsoft Office 365 Tenant. All content that was migrated, retained the original author, modifier, created and modified dates.
Thanks to the work done with the T-Systems migration practice and the expertise of the T-Systems consultants, our client was able to offer each business entity a flexible automated migration from legacy IBM Intranet and collaboration systems to the Microsoft Office 365 Cloud.
The automated migration solution allowed for the capture of content from all three legacy IBM systems. It also allowed for the automatic transformation of content, from these legacy systems, to fit with the mobile first design and modern SharePoint experience. This was especially useful to entities with large volumes of Intranet content and thousands of collaboration communities. The automated migration was able to migrate tens of thousands of IBM Communities and Quickr Places and hundreds of thousands of IBM WCM pages. The new platform allows the users to continue collaborating with colleagues while also providing the capability to continue accessing all of the content they created in the legacy system, in a more modern environment.
Our client was able to de-commission the legacy IBM platform and switch to the new Microsoft Office 365 platform on time as planned. It allowed for the projected global cost savings of the platform switch to be realised.
